ABOUT ME
Hi, I’m Laura Kincaid, a freelance editor and typesetter with over a decade’s experience in the publishing industry, working with both publishers and self-publishing authors.
Then
After graduating from Edinburgh Napier in 2009 with a first class honours BA in Publishing, I spent eight years working in production at Canongate Books, one of the UK’s leading independent publishers. This was a versatile role that involved managing ebook and print production as well as proofreading, typesetting and cover artworking.
Outside of Canongate, I began to build Ten Thousand, a successful freelance business providing editing and book design. In order to expand this business, I moved to a part-time role with award-winning children’s publisher Barrington Stoke in 2017, where I oversaw print production and again helped with proofreading and typesetting.
Now
In October 2019, I went fully freelance and have enjoyed every minute! I love working with books (200+ since the business began!) at every stage of the process, whether for authors or publishers, but helping authors self-publish has become one of the most fulfilling parts of the job.
In addition to working directly with publishers across the UK, I specialise in guiding authors through the whole self-publishing journey, from editing their manuscript, through laying it out for print and/or creating an ebook, to assisting with upload to Amazon, etc.
In my off hours you can find me pottering around my garden or walking through forests, curled up with a good book or wrestling my own novel into submission.
Clients
The majority of my work comes from repeat clients, including publishers such as BackPage, Barrington Stoke, Black & White, Bookouture, Edinburgh University, Historic Environment Scotland, Severn House, Scottish Book Trust and Zuleika.
I have also worked with many self-publishing authors, including Valerie Adolph, Alison Chandler, Simon Christmas, Eliza Langland, Peter Ritchie, Anna Velfman, Tom Wood and David Videcette.
I have been a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading since 2021.
